Originally Mt. Angel was settled in 1850 by Ben Cleaver, he later helped a railroad station establish and named it Filmore after a railroad official. Rev Fr. Adelheim Odermatt came to Oregon soon after, with Benedictine Monks from Engelbery, Switzerland.

Together they claimed a new American daughter house. Due to all his efforts in the local churches, helping post offices and the nearby elevation Lone Butte came to be known as Mount Angel in 1883. The city was then established and incorporated in April 3, 1893.

As of the last government census there were 3121 people, 1059 households, and 661 families living in those homes. The population density sat at 3264 people per square miles. Out of those 1059 households 35% of them have children under 18, 48% are married and living under the same roof, and 10.8% are single female families.
