Harney County Information & Highlights

Harney is a very small county in Eastern Oregon. The county seat is Burns. It was originally established in 1889, and named after a respected military officer William S Harney. One unique fact, is that Harney is Oregons largest county by total area. 

A little History...Harney was created from the southern 2/3 of Grant County, back in 1889. Because of a giant bloody political battle, a special group of night riders created and led a march. Which ended in the creation of Burns as the county seat. 

There are 3 main industries that rule. Sheep, timber/wood and ranching. On top of that they get a decent amount of tourism because   of the largest Ponderosa Pine forest. Which brings amazing game, hunting and camping opportunities. 

As of the last census, there are 7,670 people, divided into 3,045 households and 2,045 families. 

The median income per household is $30,877, and the median income per family is $36,817. Leaving the per-capita income at $16,150.
