Mehama was named for the wife of a pioneer names James X Smith. A business man who operated a ferry on the North Santiam. A few years later Mehamah, was established in 1877. But a few years later, the mistake was caught and the name was changed to Mehama in 1881. 

As of the last census in 2000, there were 110 total households, with 283 people and 77 familes. The population density is 596 people per square mile.

Out the 110 households 31.8% of them had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58% are married couples living under the same household, and 9% are single female families with no husband.
