Independence Oregon Information & Highlights

Independence is a city incorporated in Polk County. Right on the west bank of the Willamette River, next to Oregon Route 51. Just east of Monmouth. It is also part of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the last census, the population is 9,510.

It was founded by pioneers who migrated from Independence Missouri.  Around 1845 Elvin A Thorp arrived in the area and staked a claim of Ash Creek in June that very same year.

12 years later Henry Hill came through the plains, looking for a level piece of ground to rasie some cattle. A few months later he found his location on the west bank of The Willamette River. He then marked his donation land claim. Shortly thereafter it was named, Henry Hill's Town of Independence.
