Gervais Oregon Information & Highlights
This small town was names after a Pioneer names Joseph Gervais, who was one of the first settlers on the French Prairie.
On Oct 6, 1902 98% of the business district was burned down to the ground. The nerby fire departments resources were so little, that Portland and Salem were called upon. But could not get there in time. All that was left, was all but about 2 businesses.
Then in the late 1960's, the Russian Old Believers established a small colony between Gervais and Mt.Angel. As of today, Oregon still has the highest population of Old Believers in the USA.
Currently there are 2,009 people in 452 households, seperated into 391 families in the small town of Gervais. The population density is estimated to be 5,133 people per sq mile.
As a whole, the city is spread out with 37% under the age of 18, 12.9% ages 18 to 24, 34% from 25 to 44, 10.6% from 45 to 64 and 4.7% who are over the age of 65.
The median income for a household in the Gervais is $43,882 and the total median income for a family is $44,118. The total per capita income for the city is $10,862. About 17% of the population are below the poverty line.
