This town was founded in 1850 by a two men named Andrew Smith and Joel Palmer. Palmer was the superintendent of indian affairs for the Oregon properties. Smith named this town after his original home town, Dayton, Ohio.
They shortly after opened their first post office in 1851 with Christopher Taylor serving as postmaster.
The most historic part of this town is the oldest standing structure, the Joel Palmer House.
