Dallas Oregon Information & Highlights

Dallas is the county seat of Polk County, with a population of 14,583 according the 2010 census. It's located right on Rickreall Creek, just shy 15 miles west of Salem. It is also a big part of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical area.

It was originally settled in 1840, and originally named Cynthian or Cynthiana. Many people claimed that the original name came from Jesse Applegate's wife, Cynthia Ann.

Shortly thereafter Dallas established its first post office in 1852. 4yrs later they moved the town 1 mile south because of the lack of clean water. 

The most noted places of Dallas is the Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge. Totaling 2492 acres, and home to many Dusky Canada Geese, which nest almost exclusively in the Willamette Valley. Baskett Slough is located on Highway 22, just outside of Dallas, though it has a Dallas address.
