The city was named after a man named John J Crabtree, who was a native of Virginia. He arrived in Oregon around 1845, where he wandered in the Tualatin Plains. Until he finally bought the William Packwood Donation Land Claim just of the Santiam River in 1846. John then decided to name the community after his cousin Fletcher Crabtree.
